And welcome to podcast insider for September 1st, 2022. I'm Mike
Dell. I'm the host this week. And joining me is McKenzie Bennett again, how are you feeling after,
uh, catching some crud? Oh. Yeah. I don't know what happened at
podcast movement last week, but, um, something got me, something got show too. You guys are, uh, sniffling and hacking and you're you're
voice does sound better this, uh, today than it did yesterday, so. Okay. Good. Yeah, I think you're
getting there .Socher early. So we got our normal news and uh, some blueberry stuff and a best practice
and, uh, no interview this week, but we have one coming,
I believe next week. Of course our blueberry pro tip
end the question of the week mm-hmm so, uh,
let's get to the news.So YouTube is rolling out
a podcast section. Uh, you may or may not be able to get there
depending on where you're at or your account, whether it's enabled or not. But to me it looks just like
a bunch of videos that, uh, call themselves podcasts.
But what do I know? yeah, to be honest, um, I
haven't really heard much about this.Like I heard, uh, mumblings of it at podcast movement last
week when it was basically announced, but I didn't really look into it. So is it kind of just like a profile
page saying like you have a podcast, but it's just YouTube videos. Yeah. It's just, uh, a section that says podcasts and
then there's a whole bunch of podcasts listed, but they're,
you know, YouTubes of podcasts. So , you know,
that's fine. You know, there's some of 'em that are just static
image and audio playing and there's others in here that are, uh, you
know, actual videos of podcasts. So, you know, that's cool,
whatever they wanna call it, but it's really just YouTube
videos of podcasters. I'm, I'm just,I'm not gonna get upset about
the intricate details anymore. About what people call a podcast. No, me either don't. Wanna call it a podcast. Great. Yeah. You know, podcast is, I guess, becoming a generic term for
internet, audio or video, maybe mm-hmm there's
other ways of doing it anyway. Yeah.I'm not gonna get hung up on that either, but guess who else is
jumping into podcasting? Twitter is back isn't that how
they started like a long time ago. They. Originally O which was a, uh, I guess a directory of podcasts. I remember them vaguely from way
back at the beginning, but, uh, yeah, Jack Dorsey and, uh, that
crew, uh, ran O and then, uh, pivoted into Twitter or micro
blogging is what they called it. And so there's where we're at now
with Twitter. So they're anyway, they're, uh, adding, and
then I use big air quotes, podcasts to Twitter because what
they're doing is they're just curatinga list of podcasts that you, that
they think you might be interested in, which I, it hasn't rolled out to
me yet. So I have not seen it. Yes, same. I don't know if I would really say
that's podcasting is coming to Twitter. I'd say that's more of
the algorithm. .Yeah, yeah, yeah. Know, they're
just kind of recommending podcasts. It looks like, and you can listen to
them right in the Twitter app apparently, but, uh, oh, okay. I haven't
got it yet, but you know, it's the same thing I was talking about
when Facebook added podcasts and then quickly got rid of them is, you know, I don't go to Facebook for podcasts,
you know, neither do I, I go to pod, I go to Facebook to maybe
learn about podcasts or help podcasters or promote business
or whatever, you know, but, uh, it's not a podcast destination.
And, you know, Twitter's the same thing. I, you know, I don't consider it a destination now
maybe by figuring out who I follow and what tweets I put out or whatever, maybe they can give me some decent
recommendations so that, you know, that may be cool. But, uh, and I'm not gonna sit in Twitter
and listen to podcasts. I don't. Think I wouldn't either. Um, but you know, some people do use social
media in other ways than we do. We've been involved in podcasting for a
very long time and we are kind of set in our listening ways. That's true. So. Who knows, maybe this will get
some other people you never. Know. Yeah, that is true
for sure. Ah, alright. So this next story is, uh, apple is updating their
technical specifications for RSS, which, uh, you know, nothing
too earth shattering, except for no more email addresses in the, in the feed. So yeah. So how will that affect people? Uh, well, they're, they're gonna have to find another
way to authenticate ownership of a podcast feed, which, uh, the guys
over at podcast 2.0 are working on, and I know they talk to apple, so maybe
they'll come together on some sort of, you know, some sort of a way of doing
that without using email. Okay. So, but I, you know, they're, they're a little
ahead of it. They're announcing it now. It's gonna be in 2023 that
they're changing. It's. Closer than we think. Yeah. I it's, you know, we're
into September, holy CRI,
you know, . Yeah.But where'd the summer
go. Uh, yeah. But yeah, you know, getting the, the email out of feeds is a
good idea. I mean, you know, you, and I probably both get a
bunch of spam because of that. Or, or at least I do, you know, and I've got two or three shows with
my email addresses the account and, you know, I get all kinds of pitches,
you know, move away from blueberry, blah, blah, blah. You know, , mm-hmm
if we do get those too,mm-hmm , I I've been assured
by the company that was doing that, that, uh, that is stopping.
So that's good. We did, I did have a chat with them at
the, uh, at the show last week, so. We'll take their word for it. Yes. So I hope so, but, uh, anyway, okay. So this is the story you
found over on newswires. Yes, it is. This is, um, it says the podcasting global
market is going to grow at a rate of 30% through the next
couple years through 2026. Yeah. That's. So this is really saying that, you know, it's expected to grow over
58 billion to grow two 58 billion in 2026. Oh. Wow. That's uh, you know, I think we
just busted a billion last year. .So. So that's good. That's a
long way to go .Yeah, this is, I mean,
it's a combination of, it says sales of podcasting services by
entities. That would definitely be us. Yeah. Um, and then I believe
advertising is involved in. This. Oh yeah, definitely.
It's gotta be advertising and. It's everything. Yeah. Well, I mean pay,
uh, that would be great. I'm, I'm certainly, uh,
willing to, uh, take that ride,so. Yeah. Yeah. Very good. Very good.
All right. So the, the, uh, top 10 genres came out to
Edison research for quarter two and, uh, comedy is back
on top for a long time. We replaced it for a. While. Yeah. News was on there for probably
most of the pandemic years there. Excellent. And, uh, I think
comedy was like third, you know, true crime was up there. Religious
has always been up there, but I don't see them on the list. Well,
okay. They're number 10 now, but, uh, yeah, so it goes, comedy is number one
news, number two, society and culture. Number three, true crime, four sports, five business six. Now, if look, listening to our customers business
would be number two, probably. Yeah, I would say so. Yeah. Arts is seven TV and
film is eight that's down from number six. And education is up from
number 10 at number nine and religion, uh, was number nine and they
kind of switched spots with education. Okay. So, so anyway, that's the
latest from Edison research. I mean, it's just following
the way of the world right now. Oh yeah. Well, you know,
everybody can use a little comedy. We had a little comedy getting
this recording started didn't we. You know what, yeah. Quite a
bit, actually, quite a bit. Maybe it was tragedy. I
don't know, but .Only if we would have to record again. Yes, this is true. So we've
got two recorders running, so one of 'em ought to stay
running. I don't know. All right. The, uh,and when I say new podcast
app, I mean the new, uh, podcast apps that, uh,
podcast 2.0 supported apps. Uh, but anyway, fountain, which is,
uh, recent come or to podcasting, now they have a new chart. So just
what the world needs more charts, but this one's called hot on
fountain. And, uh, I think it's, uh, skewed more towards a lot of the shows
that are doing value for value. Okay. Uh, with a podcast 2.0, but, uh,
yeah, no agendas number two, which surprised me. Uh, there's one,
uh, number one there, rabbit hole recap. I have no idea what that is,
but, uh, there, number one. I haven't heard of this app yet.
Um, is it Android and iPhone? Yeah. Yeah. Fountain, uh, it's,
it's, it's the app that, uh, a lot of people use for streaming
Satoshis to, uh, podcasters. And. That would be why. I have, yeah, it's a it's yeah. It's,
it's a little on the geeky side still, but, uh, it's getting there, but
it's a, it's a pretty decent, uh, listening app and you can
earn Satoshi's for listening, which is interesting. I don't know
how they're funding that, but, uh, it is cool. I've been, uh, using it on some of the shows
that I listen to if they're, uh, value enabled and uh, that way
I can stream some stats to them. And then I earn some sta sat and
it's just kind of fun. Like I said, I don't suspect that I'm gonna be
making a million dollars anytime soon on Bitcoin pieces, but
, you never know. I.Mean, if, yeah, if that was likely for
that to happen, I would actually care. Yeah. But yeah. And this show is over
on fountain, of course. And it is, uh, value enabled. So you can earn extra money if you listen
on fountain or at least earn some SATs to then pass on to your
favorite podcaster. Yeah. This is something that came out, uh,
during podcast movement, new voodoo, there we go. Yeah. New voodoo, new voodoo. They come out with a thanks to six things. Listeners love about podcasts
and four that make 'em crazy. And I didn't really
dig too much into this. They have don't, they. Have like a chart of the
things and it looks like gen Z male has like true crime and
pop culture and scripted comedy and managing money and comedy and
gen Z female has true crime comedy self-help pop culture and managing
money, millennial male, managing money, comedy, sports, business
productivity, millennial, female, true crime comedy self-help
news, health, and fitness. All of the different
types of content. Yeah. Well see, I gen X for
sports. I don't know. I don't listen to any sports
podcasts, but uh .Yeah. I would say, I mean,
you've, you seem to be in the, uh, minority there yeah. Of your
age group of your, you know? Yeah. Well, that's not abnormal for
me, so that's good. But yeah, it's, it's an interesting article.
And, uh, like I said, the little bit that I read about it,
they don't have like a straight list of, uh, of the crazy, uh, things. So I think they're talking more
about genre mm-hmm .So, and like the ones that you actually like
compared to the ones you do not enjoy. Yeah. And ironically, this next story, uh we're we're using
zoom today because, uh, we figured out that Skype is what
causes my roader to crash. So. yeah. You're roader
two or whatever it's.Called. Yeah. Roader pro two. Yeah.
And, uh, I talked to the, the people at, at road who made the thing and, uh, they're trying to figure out why that
would happen and gave me some pointers and I haven't had a chance to
test it out yet. So we'll, uh, we'll see if we can get back to
where we're using our normal setup, but may not have to, since you're, uh, you got a new microphone
at podcast movement. Yeah. So I'm still waiting on
our stuff to be delivered, um, coming back from podcast
movement last week, but we ended up getting me one
of the sure. Microphones. Yeah. The one that I was using to record last
week when we were at podcast movement, it was the, uh, I believe
it's the MV seven. Yep. MV seven. When we
got you the USB version. So you can record from home. You won't have to deal with
all the equipment .Yeah. The equipment at the office
is a little overdone if you ask me. And, um, I, uh, I hate it. Yeah. What if you used it every day and
stuff, that's a great setup, but again, you know, you don't, you're not in
there much, but anyway, uh, the, the article we were talking, we were going to talk about zoom kind
of took over podcasting, you know, lately you hear almost, not
everybody, but you know, there's a lot of people that are using
zoom for these remote recordings, especially during the whole COVID
thing, when everybody was locked down, staying home and all that, you know, a
lot of stuff was done over zoom. I mean, you see it everywhere. And, uh, but they
had a survey that finds it. You know, some of the pre pandemic
habits are starting to return. So maybe zoom will lose a little steam
there. But, uh, I tell you, you know, it's been pretty solid for us, uh, not
for podcasting necessarily, but for, you know, pretty much all of our. Day to day operations. Yeah. We use
it. Yeah. And have almost no problems. I'm on it too much. .You are. But, uh, you know, and you know, I used to use go toeing and that
was fine software 10 years ago, but this, you know, zoom seems to be a little more solid
and stable and easier to use. And, you know, I don't blame people
for using it for podcasts. The quality's quite decent. I mean, you
know, Mackenzie sounds pretty good. Uh, and she's remote to me and we're
recording it here on my end. So via zoom. I think if you've got the setup,
it is a very decent option to use. Oh, certainly. Certainly. Yeah. And
here's our best practice for today. Uh, Mackenzie, you came
up with that and, uh, it's kind of ironic that your
voice was shot yesterday. .Yeah. So, um, our, our
tip of the day is, uh, taking care of your voice.
Um, if you work in podcasting, do anything for voiceover,
generally do anything for audio, even if you're just doing stuff for
social media, like TikTok or, you know, um, Instagram reels or
literally anything mm-hmm, where you're gonna
be recording your voice. Um,take care of it last week, Nike,
you were one of them, you know, we're on the expo floor, we're going to the parties in the
evenings that are loud and we're just politely happily yelling at each other
to be able to hear each other. And, um, yeah. My voice was shot. Your voice was shot last week when we
were in Dallas and then I was doing perfectly fine. I was so good. And then I got home and got real sick
and sounded like trash yesterday. I don't sound great today, but I sound
much better than I did. Yeah. Yeah. I attribute that to lots of tea. yeah. Well, you know,
but basically, you know, taking care of your voice while
podcasting always have, you know, like a glass of water or
something handy, you know, don't eat while you're podcasting.
So many people do that. The people that think that's
okay are boggles my mind, but that's a whole other discussion,
but, um, yeah, lots of like, don't do any dairy, um, like immediately before you
record or something like that. Um, if you're gonna be doing
this on a regular basis, really just try to keep
this in mind because. Yeah. You'll, you'll learn over time.
What, what works, what doesn't, but, you know, going to a party, a loud party, right before you record where you're
screaming the night before you might wake up with a, you know, a
crappy voice .Yeah. There's gonna be like one person who's
gonna end up sounding cooler and like sounds good with it. And then everyone
else is gonna sound like I do right now. And it's not so fun. but take care of yourself. I
mean, that's the other thing, you know,if you're mm-hmm ,
if you're sick, you sh you know,it's not any fun to podcast, so. No. But you're doing it. Thank
you. yes. Well, she had to come to the office anyway
to get our delivery of, uh, of stuff. So I. Guess it. A, uh, wasn't too bad. Multi task day too at the office. All right. So on the blueberry stuff,
really, not a whole lot in there. Uh, of course we're getting back in
the groove after podcast movement. And I think overall it was
a pretty good show. Uh, the traffic was a little
bit down, I think, for the number of people that were
there at the booth, but, you know, the, the networking was really good. I
got to talk to a lot of people, uh, a lot less newbies at this
show than, uh, say podcast or, uh, some podcast movements in the past. It seems like we talked to a
lot of established podcasters. I kind of saw this. I feel like, uh,
she podcasts last October as well, that you're speaking
to someone who is still learning and still excited to
learn. And doesn't, you know, doesn't feel like they
know everything already, but they have been podcasting for like
a year or two now. Um, as in like, they, they started
sometime probably honestly, during COVID at home and they
did quite a bit of learning on their own and they feel confident
and they know that they enjoy this. I wanna stick with it. And now
they're showing up to events saying, what can I do to really take this
above and beyond from what I'm doing currently. So, right. It. Was nice to talk to people who are, who are looking for somewhat professional
services. They're taking it seriously. Like, yeah, podcasting's fun, but we
want you to like, do well at it too. oh yeah. You know,
there's, there's hobbyist
podcasters, and, you know, there's people just
starting out and, you know, they might start out on something
like anchor or, you know, some something that's, uh, free or cheap and then decide they
really wanna graduate to the next level of podcasting. So yeah, we talked
to a lot of those people and, uh, I've been moving them this week already
moving people from various other hosts and, and whatnot. And, uh, just,
just generally, uh, you know, a lot of, lot of questions of, you know, kind
of a consulting, like thing I, I got, those are kinda my. Favorite conversations. Yeah. It was great. You know, they, people were
telling me what they wanna try to do, and then we try to figure out how to make
it happen for them. And, you know, I, I, I don't know. It was
great. And, you know, every time I go to one of
these things, I see of course, a ton of people that I
know. Yeah. You know, that's kind of the family reunion part
of it. Mm-hmm . And then,uh, I run into a lot of people that I
don't know, and I've never seen before. And, uh, and a lot of companies
booths and stuff that, you know, were never there before. And
some that were there, you know, in years past aren't there now. And
it it's, it's just kind of fun to, to see the evolution of,
uh, of what's going on. I did notice also there was
a lot more presence from big, bigger corporate podcasters, uh, or podcast companies. The, yeah. The, the
organizations behind it. Yeah. That, that whole upstairs hall, there was just full of huge companies
that like, dang, you know, they, got a big booth of, you
know, and, uh, was it, uh, serious? Was there, uh, Spotify was
there daily wire was there, there was a bunch of big
mm-hmm companies
that, well, you know,Spotify's been there co last couple years, but Sirius XM had a pretty big presence
upstairs there, you know, that's cool. Of course, they've got a
bunch of different, uh,
brands under their wing there. And Amazon was there with wonder mm-hmm
and all that. So yeah. They sponsored one of
the parties. Of course, iHeart always sponsors the big party. they? Yeah. They've been doing
that a couple years now, but, um,but it just kind of goes to show
how things have a lot of people, a lot of organizations, um,
were bought or consolidated. However you wanna think of it in the
past couple years, really joining forces, whether we wanted to, like people
wanted them to or not. Um, so that's. Consolidation, it happens.
Yeah. Uh, you know. Yeah. I see the good and the bad
out of many of those relationships. Uh, but it, it does make sense that they would be
starting to kind of show their show their faces at an event like
this more nowadays. And, and going back to that article we had
before of, you know, 30% growth by 2026, like, this is, this is
part of the reason why. That's, how it happens. And one thing I did notice that
apple had a more public presence there. They didn't have a
booth or anything, but, uh, I, I seen a lot more of the apple team this
time than, uh, we have in years past. And I mean, we might also see that more
up close because they know our faces. Oh. Of course. But, you know, but,
but you know, it was, yeah, probably to the average attendee, they probably didn't know if they were
talking to somebody from apple .Yeah. But, uh, you know, of course
we had a, we had a meeting with 'em. We always meet with 'em at least once, uh, at these events that they're
at mm-hmm and,and you Todd and I had a little little
meeting about something upcoming that's been announced, uh, that's gonna be
happening this fall, which would be cool. And we talked a little
bit about their, uh, RSS update or their requirements
update RSS isn't updating, but, uh, Apple's requirements are updating, which is gonna cause the rest of the
industry to sort of follow along, which is good, you know, cuz. As it always does. Yeah. Cuz they, they are sort of the
leader of this. I mean they don't own it, but they, you know, they definitely, uh, drive some of the technical stuff and
it was really good that they're talking with, uh, Dave and Adam from uh,
podcast 2.0 mm-hmm uh,or podcast index. So, uh, maybe we'll get some of that stuff
supported by apple. That would be awesome. But yeah, overall I think it was a, a
worthy show, a Cho got her first, uh, trade show experience.
And uh, she did, she did, she did really well and she dragged
me off to a couple of booths. Oh, check this out. Oh, check that
out. it was great. Uh,I've been playing with that
E cam live thing, but uh, it wasn't ready for prime time yet.
So we're not trying it this week, but UHS pretty. Soon and we will soon. Yep. So soon look for that. Uh that'll that'll up our video game
for, uh, for live. So let's see, Todd's gonna be at dragon
con this weekend in Atlanta. He's probably on a plane now. Uh, yeah,
I believe so. From, from Las Vegas, he had another event in Las Vegas
this week. That's why he is not here. Traveling, man. Yeah. He's been on the road.
It'll be two, two full weeks. By the time he gets home. So either he is gonna be ready
to sit still or you want, he is gonna ready to jump on another
airplane and go on vacation. Maybe. I don't know. we'll see.Sounds like he deserves a vacation. Yes. Yes. It's the first day of
international podcast day month. Is it such a thing? I don't know, but I'm gonna
go ahead and say that there is Mike,I saw it on, I saw someone mention
it on Twitter and I was like, that's a great thing to say. yep. Yep.So the international podcast day is
back for a live stream this year, but they're gonna do a reasonable eight
hours instead of a ridiculous 32 hours. So. Honestly, very understandable. And I don't know if we're gonna
be involved in that and or not. I think we probably will in
some way or another. And uh, but yeah. Look for that at, uh, gonna
be on the, I believe the 30th, right? Uh, yes. Yeah. So it'll be on the 30th.
It'll be more information. We'll talk about it coming
up to it cuz you know, Steve and Dave are good friends of the
show here, so we'll definitely, uh, promote that whether we're
involved or not. Yeah. Big fans of. Them. Yeah. Definitely something else I
was gonna mention. Yeah. There's a, there's another podcast day
Australia and podcast day for, uh, UK. It's gonna be like
in the first week of October, I'll have more information
about that as well. So there's more people getting into
that sort of around this time of year podcast day. okay. Dunno why it's around
this time of year, but that's okay.Well it's Steve and Dave. They
well so all right. So I got a, a pro tip here from
Toby. So, uh, let's listen to that. Hi, it's Toby Goodman here today. Podcast content problems
through the lens of Elton John, when a VIP podcasting client flew from
the USA into London telling me she wanted to see Elton John, I knew I
needed to get a few tickets, especially when I discovered he was
playing just up the road from my home. But honestly I was concerned Elton isn't, someone I'd paid too much attention
to in the last 25 years or so. And the videos of him playing during
lockdown suggested he might be past his best, but to cut to the night
of the show, I was blown away. The show was amazing. I had
the best time he sang well, but what was most impressive
were the production values, an ACE band with arrangements sensitively
supporting his vocal limitations, coupled with a production crew who
made his old songs sound fresh. Unlike these stay at home
restrictions of COVID. This was a real team effort looking
around the place tens of thousands of people were clearly
feeling the same as I was. What's all this got to do with
podcasting. Well, I get that. You might sometimes have concerns
about generating new content, but I've come to learn that
it's okay to repeat your ideas. I may have discovered Elton
John many decades ago, but I was genuinely
enthused to hear songs. I was familiar with being performed
with a slightly different approach. The environment I was in was
new, his tempo and tone changed. The truth is it's impossible
to sing the same song. Exactly the same more than once and
side note in an episode entitled Parais of Malcolm Gladwell's
revisionist history podcast, he shares a story about how Elvis only
ever sang are you lonesome tonight correctly. Once anyway, back in London, Elton reinforced my belief that these
songs were well crafted and I was happy to hear them in a new context, great artists learn that playing the
hit is a great way to create a long and prosperous career. And I'm pretty sure podcasters could
learn a thing or two from that. This isn't about me convincing
you to like Elton John. This is about me letting you know
that if you have a position as a podcaster, don't worry
about running out of ideas. Listeners come and go and may
not have heard you early stuff. You have a responsibility to your
listener and yourself to be able to convey your message in a number
of different ways. So maybe it's not more ideas you need
just more ways to communicate and connect them. So if you are looking for the podcast
equivalent of Elton John's band and production team, to make sure your
podcast makes your listeners ears dance, the blueberry pro team
are your perfect choice. And we'd love to hear
from you come and say hi over@blueberrypro.com. Yeah, that makes sense. Uh,
we, we do that a lot here. We'll talk about the same
things, but in a different way, uh, quite a bit. It's just like how ads
work. You have to hear. 'em a certain number of times
before they really click in. Yeah, that's true. And you know,
there's always new people coming in and, and people dropping off and
mm-hmm, , you know, they may not have heard this particular
tip that we would give out. And uh, you know, of course, you know, sometimes
we call it beating a dead horse, but that's because we're here every
week, you know but you know, not everybody is. Yeah. I loved that. Elton
John analogy though. And it's a good thing that I muted myself
while listening to that, because one, I had a coughing fit and two, I almost
spit out my tea when he said Elton John. so.Well done. Toby. Yeah. And I liked the, uh, in Elvis
too. Never sang that song right. Once or only sang it once. Right.
Probably when you recorded it. And uh, the question of the week
and this one came from Facebook, I don't remember who, but uh, she said my recording is getting
a lot of background noise. How do I reduce the background
noise coming into my microphone? The main thing is to not record any
background noise. And I, you know, that sounds kind of simple, doesn't it?
Uh, but , but things you can do,that'll help, uh, make sure you're in the
quietest place you can be now. You're, you're kind of, uh, you're in our studio and apparently you're
doing construction next door so. Yeah, they stopped. But when
I was going through the drama, that is this studio at the
beginning, when I first got here, um, there was a lot going on. I have a
feeling, they took a launch break. Well, that's good. So, uh, we, we timed
it. Right. That's the other thing, time it right. .Yeah. Good. Point. You know, if you know, you know, if you got someone mowing your
lawn or something, uh, you know, or there's construction going on, wait
till they take a break, if you can, you know, sometimes you can't, but
uh, but do do the best you can. Don't blame your neighbors. No. I saw some terrible TikTok the
other day or something that was about, um, the people
upstairs getting yelled at, by their neighbors down below who
are podcasters. And they were like, I'm we have to live our lives, you're
recording. And like, uh, run the mill, not fancy apartment building.
I don't know what you expected. Like you're gonna have
some noise around you. Yeah. And you know, that, that does
happen, but there's things you can do, you know? Yes. Like, you know, turn off
anything with a fan. It, if you can, you know, now a lot of people have
computers with loud fans. Well, just make sure that's behind your
microphone and not, you know, not in front of it, turn off your air
conditioning, if you can, you know, if you're not gonna roast, you know, any
other noise producing things, you know, that's one of the reasons I don't have
a refrigerator in my office because the damn things make noise. .Mm-hmm, like,
don't sit next to a window. If you live on the street, like I do. Yeah. Or, you know, you can soundproof
behind you is the best place, but you know, around,
if you can, you know, hang a blanket up behind you
when you record that's, you know, if you don't have a permanent way of
noise proving or make sure your background has like a bookshelf and some
books on it and you know, something that's just not a flat wall. The beloved podcast Fort it works. Yeah. And then, uh, you know, of course, if you're in a room that
doesn't have carpet, get a, get a rug to stick under under your chair
and yeah. You know, and all that, uh, you know, just, or, you know, close
curtains or blinds on windows, if you can, uh, that'll uh, help it,
not bounce off the glass. And, uh, that's the beauty of
podcasting. It doesn't have to be pretty. No, it doesn't have to be perfect
either. You know, you know, I'm sure you've heard little background
noises here and there, you know, I have I'm in the single worst place
on the planet to podcast I'm next to a coast guard air station. So I get helicopters flying over mm-hmm
I get jets landing. I get,uh, I'm near the bay. So I get jet
skis. I get I'm on a five lane road. I've got train tracks here. You
know, I got all kinds of things, but I think my recordings
usually sound pretty decent. You. Do you make it work? Because. I made, you know, I've made some
changes in the room here that, uh, that helped the quietness a bit.
So, and another thing, uh, you know, if you still have some noise, whatever, turn the gain down on your recording
system, your microphone, and, uh, get closer to it. Uh, and then you can
always boost it in postproduction. Uh, I, I use a phonic, uh, if I have to do that or I do
use APH phonic anyway, but, uh, and if you have a dynamic, Mike, use
that instead of any condensers, you know, if you have a definitely you
have a blue snowball, well, you're kinda on your own on that. Just turn the gain way down and get up
close to it. But, uh, you know, try, try to, you know, get a, a dynamic which definitely rejects
extra noise a bit better than, than a condenser. And a little bit of
ambiance doesn't hurt a thing. You know, like last week you could hear
the show floor a little bit, even though we were in a
supposedly soundproof booth, but you could still hear stuff going
on out on the floor. And, uh, mm-hmm, , that's fine. We
were on location. You know, if an,if a helicopter flies over, I'm not
gonna stop recording. It just, you know, Hey, this helicopter just flew over,
you know, stuff happens. It's not a, not a big thing. And then sometimes
you just can't help it. So, you know, do what you do your best, but,
uh, doesn't have to be perfect. So I think that brings us to a close here. On a good note, too, that do your best,
but it doesn't have to be perfect. Just, you know what, Mike, you're just
giving out life advice right now. Not just podcast. Advice. True. Well, you
know, it is what it is. So. Also life advice, just less, uh,
less with a positive spin. There. Don't wanna be Debbie downer
here. you know, that, that's the thing about podcasting. It's,
it's not professional all the time. We're technically a
professional podcast company. And my first 20 minutes in the office
today, I was like, ringing my hair out, trying to figure out what was
wrong with a stupid studio. so right. But doing my best, I got it to. Work. Yes. And it, you know, you
sound good, but like I say, you know, sound quality is very
important, but you know, if you can only do so much
anyway, uh, let's, uh, close this up and get outta here. Okay. If you have got a question
