Hey. Welcome to Geek This. My name is Dave Clements, and David Hunt's with me. I'm David Hunt. Hey, everybody. Hey, Dave. So we've got, we're gonna try and keep this one a little bit shorter, because we have previously talked about x men ninety seven. We talked about the first two episodes a couple episodes back. So we're gonna kinda do kind of a, kind of a review of the whole first season and give you our thoughts and all that jazz. But first, you've been geeking out about anything this week, David? So, in a little bit of spare time that I've had, I've just been playing a lot of well, not a lot, but a little bit of, the Final Fantasy seven rebirth. Nice. How's that going? So, not bad. I think I'm about halfway through. Yeah. Just kinda taking my time with it. It's a long game, but I'm I'm enjoying it. You know, it's a nice continuation of of the oh, what was the first one called? Crisis Core? No. That that's a different game. No. That Okay. That was pretty cool. Well, the the, like, the the new version of Final Fantasy seven was anyway, I almost said remaster. I mean, I said, no. It's a complete anyway. Anyway. Let's see if I can I bet you could? One more time. Could. It'll just be the title of the episode. Anyway. Anyway. No. It's a good game. There are a lot of mini games in it. Remake. That's the word I was looking for. Wow. I don't know how to fix it. Time. I think it's the getting old thing. Yeah. I don't do it. Yes. And and having kids. Kids take up all your mind space. But, yeah, I, I like it. There's a lot of mini games that can be kind of annoying, but, you know, then when you finally beat the mini camp, you feel a sense of accomplishment even though, like, it's like you just beat a small little tiny mini game inside of a game. Like, yeah. I did it. That's funny. I like it. Is that why it's taking you so long to actually beat the game, maybe? Probably. If I if I just, like, you know, push through, I could probably get through a lot faster. But I'm a Yeah. I'm a completionist, so I like to do everything. And then games any sort of RPG when you're completionist, it makes it a much, much longer game than it needs to be. Yeah. I am not a completionist as everybody should know now. I've started hundreds of games and finished tens of games. And did you ever, did you finish the God of War sequel? The twenty eighteen? Was it twenty eighteen? No. Twenty six. So not the so the sequel never, Ragnarok. Not picked it up yet. No. Play that? I know there's a PS four version, but I don't remember the last time I touched my PS four. I You gotta play it. I love the first one. That's probably something that we should talk about because I don't think we have. But I'd probably have to replay that one too because I did finish that one. I did play that to the end. And I didn't hundred percent it, but I finished it. Yeah. And Ragnarok has, Thor in it, and Thor is one of my favorite characters in mythology. So, anyway, that's a anyway, that's another game. And this isn't the the the video game episode. Oh, funny. What about you? What have you been thinking? Well, so I a few episodes ago, I was talking about, twenty one pilots, and they were releasing a new album. As we record this, and hopefully, the day that this episode actually comes out, they, their new album, Clancy, is coming out, which I'm super excited for. I haven't been this excited for an album release since I was, like, I don't twenty? So a long time. But I'm pretty stoked about that. They've been they've released, today as we're recording, they released a new single. It's the last single before the full album comes out. And then on Friday, they are dropping, a video, an actual music video for every single song on the album. So there will be a total of thirteen videos Wow. For this album. So there's that, which I don't wanna geek out too much about that, but it's it's been kind of, like, top shelf geeking out for me and kinda like the other the other one that I've been geeking out about. Have you ever heard of the fall of the house of Usher? It's a story written by Edgar Allan Poe. I've heard of it. One of my favorite horror I don't directors, writers, creative people, Mike Flanagan. He he did a, like, a little miniseries for Netflix. And so I started watching that and just See, that's actually what I had heard. I didn't realize it was a a Poe. So I I had started watching that. Not that I need, like, to know anything about the story or anything. The show's been pretty good. Definitely mature audiences. But, I just, by happenstance, happened to I picked up a book from Libby, the the library app called hold on. I gotta pull it up in front of me because I don't look at what the title is. I just go I'm going to Libby. I'm playing the book because I'm listening to it. It is called What Moves the Dead by t Kingfisher. It is kind of a retelling of that story, so it's been interesting to to listen to that book and then, you know, watch an episode of the show, which is like a modern retelling of that story. So, it's like I don't know. I found it very, I might knock something over. Yeah. I've I found it very, very intriguing and interesting and haunting. I should probably stick with either the book or the show at one time, but, you know, when I go to bed, I'm listening to the book. If I'm up in my office working, sometimes I have it playing. But, yeah, those are kind of the things that have my attention right now. Yeah. I I've, yeah, I've heard of the the miniseries, but I've I've never dove into that. So maybe I'll have to check that. Yeah. I mean, if you like horror and I think the thing that I like about this horror is it's not it's not really in your face, at least not yet. It's it's haunting. There's some really good scenes, between two characters that are are pretty spooky. So, yeah, if you ever get around to it, I think it's the second or third episode, is a little traumatizing. I I was not expecting where it was gonna go, but, it definitely got its hooks in me. So I'll definitely be watching that, finishing it. So, are you ready to move on to our main topic update, Dave? Main topic. Topic. Topic. Topic. Topic. Yeah. We are, as I said at the top of the show, we are gonna talk about X Men ninety seven. Really just kinda give you a rundown of season one, give you our opinions, all that good stuff. We talked about the first two episodes a couple episodes back, so go back, listen to those, and, you know, maybe maybe juxtapose the two and see if if things changed between then and now. I'm gonna say probably not. But, yeah, like, I don't know exactly where you wanna start with this. I feel like an overall impression is probably best. So what did you think of this whole first season? I loved it. This was one of the first shows in a while that for me was really, like, appointment television where, like, every week, I was looking forward to the next episode. I'm like, okay. Oh, the a new episode dropped. I need to watch it. And it wasn't like, oh, yeah. I'll get around to that when I have the time. It's like, no. That that came out. I wanna watch it. Because I was always, you know, intrigued about what was going to happen next. They really had me on the edge of my seat, especially when it came to, like, the last three episodes, because with the three part finale. Yeah. I I felt the same way. I've I wish I would have watched it as it was coming out. I it kind of it had my attention for those first couple episodes, and then I, I think I I got about halfway through and, as always, got distracted watching something else. And then we were talking about, hey. You know, we we need to talk about this for the show. And I was like, oh, yeah. I gotta go back and watch everything. And so, over the course of a couple of days, I finished watching it, but I would recommend that you don't just binge binge watch because, like, once like, as you start getting closer to the end of this the season, the drama and action and everything just ramps way up. And I was a little overwhelmed watching those last three episodes just back to back to back, and I was like, I need a breather. Yeah. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat. And if you haven't watched it, you know, we're about ready to jump into some heavy spoilers. So, yeah, this is the your your point of no return. Yeah. That last episode where or actually might have been the second to last episode where it was the so it's the end of the second to last episode going into the finale when Magneto rips out Logan's Yeah. Second to last episode. Mhmm. Oh, man. That moment, like like, I I know that that happens in the comics. But just seeing it on screen, like, I I audibly, like, went like. Yeah. It was just such a cute moment. Man, I've again, I wish I would have stayed on top of it because I saw a screenshot of that. No context, and I'm like, what the crap? And this is, like, as I'm starting to catch up, and I'm like, when does this happen? So I'm, like, waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting, and then I get to that episode, and I'm like, that's where it's at. Yeah. There is a there is a lot. I I here's the thing. I haven't watched the original run of that show since I was little. Mhmm. So I don't remember how dramatic and soap operate it was. My understanding is it it, you know, it was back then the same as it is now. But good god. Maybe that's why I have some trauma and, whatever kind of issues that I have because this this season was intense. I was I was expecting just kind of a trip down nostalgia lane, and I felt like I got gut punched multiple times. When storm leaves Mhmm. You're like, well, that sucks. And then you find out that, Jean isn't actually Jean. Of course of course, how do you think Scott feels? Like Like You've been with another woman all along. Well, and well and they're not quite sure when the switch happened, so they don't know, like, okay. When was he with the original gene, and when did it switch? The only thing they know is is that, Madeline is the biological mother of his child. Yeah. But besides that, like That's scary. Who knows? And then I will say, probably most soul crushing of all was Gambit's death. I did not see that coming. Gambit was, like, my favorite. I remember being on the playground, and, like, I brought a deck of cards to school with me because I thought I was just so cool. And I would I would throw cards, you know, out on the playground. I always wanted one of those jackets Yeah. That he has. Yeah. One of those, like, trench coats just because Gambit was so cool. Like, I know a lot of people say that Wolverine was, like, the main guy for X Men, but for me, Gambit Yeah. Gambit was Well, he had a great girlfriend too. So it was like, you can be the coolest X Men or X Man with the coolest accent, and you have the coolest girlfriend. That's kind of how it was as a kid. Then my wife is like, oh, he can throw cards? That's kinda cool. I was like, no. It's that's not his power. His power is not throwing cards. Yeah. It's making stuff blow up. Come on. Yeah. This this show but looking forward to the so the the ending of it, the, like, sort of, like, preview for Mhmm. For next season. Not really preview, but, like, the Yeah. The stinger at the end. So next season is going to go into Apocalypse. Yeah. And did you watch did you see, like, the after quote after credits Yeah. Scene with Apocalypse. Me a little confused as I was doing some research because I was like, I feel like I remember Apocalypse showing up in the original, the original series, and he did. I think they defeated him at one point. So I'm curious how this is all gonna work out and he's coming back. Or Yeah. I I haven't watched the original the full original series in a long time. So I think in between seasons one and two, I'm going to try to sit down and watch at least Yeah. Some of the main parts. Like, seventy eight episodes, if I'm not mistaken. So Yeah. So I don't I don't know if I have time to watch all of it beforehand because it's I'm pretty sure there's pretty deep in production. Yeah. Actually, I saw that they are talking about maybe season two being released by the end of this year. So Yeah. So that's not a long time. No. Considering we're halfway through the year. So To get through that. Yeah. Yeah. And there's, I one thing I did wanna touch on, and I wish I knew more about it, but I guess, like, the week or a few days before the show premiered, like, their head writer got fired from Marvel, which it doesn't seem like it affected the show at all. Show is still fantastic. Well, the the show was Right. Already in the can. Right. Like, it was done. And I guess he season two was pretty much done Oh, okay. Okay. The writing of it. So season two should be pretty solid. But going forward from there, it'll be interesting to see what changes. You know, if you can see, oh, this is definitely different than the first two seasons. Yeah. I'm, I'm definitely excited for season two. I still I think No. You go right ahead. Sorry. Go ahead. I was just gonna say I think that Gambit will be back as one of the, apocalypse apocalypse's engine. Yeah. That's a great idea. Quite possibly. Interesting. I like that idea. Because there's no way they just kill off Gambit. Right. He's gone forever. I wouldn't I wouldn't think so. Yeah. That's a great idea. I didn't think about that at all. We also got some really good cameos, from other Marvel characters. And, again, not watching the original, I don't remember that happening. But what? We saw Spider Man, Captain America, Daredevil, Black Panther, several other, like, Marvel related characters. Yeah. Iron Iron Man. We saw Morph Yeah. And Reed Richards. They said Yeah. Yep. Morphs man. And we saw cloak and dagger. So I I feel like this is them hint like, one, it's fan service, which is great. I like fan service because this wasn't overdone. They didn't do it to a point where it didn't necessarily make sense. But it also makes me think that they are discussing what other properties can we do this with, you know, whether that's picking up, you know, Spider Man wherever it left off or something like that. I'm I don't know. I love that's that's the thing, though. I love this animation style because it's it's what I would consider, like, retro future. Like, it definitely has some of that aesthetic from the nineties, but it's definitely updated, more modernized. Because if you just look at them side by side, like, you can tell that they were hand drawing every frame versus now they're probably using, you know, computer animation and stuff like that, which, makes everything a little bit more fluid. But, yeah, this this show got me excited for whatever is coming next through Marvel Animation. And the the cool thing about seeing all those cameos is during the moments where we saw most and especially in the last few episodes when they were most of them were popping up. The reason that they were there was showing that, okay, this event that's happening to the x men, it's affecting Right. Everyone in this world. You know? And it makes it feel like a like a real it makes it feel feel more whole where it's like, okay. If these other superheroes if they were if they were actually in this universe, then, this would actually be affecting their lives as well. And it it feels makes it feel more like the comic books where you see the little connections here and there versus sometimes in the MCU, you'll see, you know, some like, a superhero have this huge thing that's happening. And then in the next and in the next movie, it just doesn't affect Right. Anyone else. Yeah. Like, okay. So in the Eternals, there's a giant a a giant robot, like Yeah. Sticking up from the ocean, but nobody mentions it. Yeah. Yeah. I don't like, I I will say, like, not every episode was a banger. You know? But What was your least favorite episode? Boy, that's a good question. It has to be an earlier episode probably because I wasn't really putting all the pieces together. I don't know that I could name one right off the top of my head. Could you? I could. Okay. Exactly which one. So if you had to cut one episode, it would have to be the the Jubilee mojo Oh, yeah. Episode. Yeah. That makes sense. It not that it was a bad episode per se. It just it wasn't needed. It it felt like extra, you know, like padding. It it did help develop, you know, the relationship between, Jubilee and what's his name? I had space. I'm struggling too. I don't the that one. That one, I can't remember. Yeah. The new guy. Sunspot. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, it's sun something. Yeah. Yeah. Sunspot. That's a great edit point right there. Yeah. It helped it helps, develop their relationship. But besides that, it really didn't do much for the story overall. Yeah. I also love that, like, in those last few episodes, well, specifically, I think it's the last I think it's the last episode, where, Xavier is in Magneto's mind, and he's kind of rehabilitating him through his mind. I I thought that was pretty clever because, like, that is stuff that you've seen in the movies and it's in the comics. And, I mean, it's not abnormal, but, you know, for for professor x to, like, come back, he's never really been my favorite x men character. It's just kind of, like, he's there to facilitate, but I think I think Scott hasn't handled, you know, until different comic series where he just loses his mind. But, Right. Yeah. I don't know. Like, some of that stuff was maybe not my my favorite. Like, the Shi'ar, like, I guess I get it. But that was kind of, like, some of my least favorite stuff. But I did like the fact that he you know when he came back, he was still being that friend to, Magnus or Magneto. You know, I I love that they return to that bond. They're not just mortal enemies, but they're they're this weird relationship of, you know, old longtime friends, but yet longtime enemies at the same time. I've always enjoyed that dynamic. Yeah. And it'll be interesting to see where they go with it going forward, because they kind of kind of left it in, like, limbo at the end where so, like, you're you're seeing Magneto sort of turn, like, bad again. Right. But you still see that that bond between Xavier, like, with Xavier helping him helping Magneto get back outside of his own mind. You know, one thing so I liked the introduction of mister Sinister. It's a character I'm not familiar with, like, at all. I just felt like once we got into the end game with Bastion, there really wasn't any reason for him to be there. Like, I I don't feel like they explained that very well. He was just sort of there as a red hair pretty much. You know, like, because you see him, like, towards the beginning of the season, you're like, oh, he's gonna be the big bad. Like, he he's gonna be the big bad of the season. Nope. Not really. Just kidding. That was a little bit of a bummer to me because I would have liked to see a little bit more of that character developed, because I'm not familiar with him. And I love I love meeting new characters. Like, Morp, again, another character that was underutilized, but I felt could have brought a little bit more story wise, especially with mister Sinister because in the credits, they they they show them together. You know? So I don't know. I I don't really have a ton of gripes, but I have a few. You know? Yeah. It's definitely not, like, like, perfect, like, no notes, but, it's it's better than I mean, I was expect I had pretty high expectations, but it was still better than I was. I didn't really know what to think. Like, I remember when it was announced, and I was just kind of like, that's cool from a nostalgia point of view, but is it gonna be good? And now I'm like, okay. Let's get season two here tomorrow so I can watch it. And what other Marvel animation stuff are we getting down the road that is not what if? I love what if, but I'm worried that it's gonna suffer the same fate as a lot of the other MCU if we don't start to pump the brakes a little bit. Yeah. Yeah. The first season of what if was pretty strong. The second season was not quite as good. So, hopefully, it doesn't continue that trend. Yeah. I I hope not. But, that's for that's for another episode. Whenever What If season three comes out, we'll we'll definitely talk about it. Do you have any other thoughts on X Men ninety seven? I don't think so. Just really looking forward to the the future of it. You know, with this being sort of a dead year for the MCU, you know, we have, Deadpool and Wolverine coming out later this year. And then, I think later this year is Agatha's all along. But that might be it. I if I'm thinking Yeah. I I can't think of anything else You're right. Coming out. We had Loki season two. So I think that might have been it for the MCU for this year. So it's been kind of a slower year. So it was nice to have this you know, sitting in the middle here, to be able to sort of have its own space. Yeah. Yeah. I I have heard like, they have talked about how they do wanna pump the brakes a little bit on, the MCU. I've heard that, at least on the Marvel television side, that they're going to try and not make everything so interconnected and require everybody to watch everything before jumping into a show, which is smart. You know, I love things being interconnected, but I love the idea more of things being connected, just in small ways. You know, kind of like you were talking about, with x men ninety seven, we get other superhero appearances, and you see that they're affected by what's going on. It would be cool that, you know, if we get an animated Iron Man or a new Spider Man show that I don't know. Maybe it references this X Men event or something like that, but it doesn't have to cater to it. You know? Spidey can do what he's gonna do and move on, and then we can just kind of see some little overlapping areas. I think that would be really the best way to go. And I I've said it before, but I think for me, my feeling is that Deadpool and Wolverine are, or is. It's it's gonna do something with the way that the MCU is currently set up. I don't know what, but I feel like it's gonna have some effect just based off of what the trailers say and show, which I'm I'm happy with. Yeah. I'm really excited for Dental, because while I think it's going to be definitely its own thing, you know, it's it's an r rated movie, sort of having having it set in the middle between, you know, the end of the Mhmm. The box films and the beginning of those moving into the the MCU. I'm looking forward to see how they use this as that transition while also being true to a a non Deadpool film. I'm assuming it has to be a really good script because I feel like that's the only way they could have talked to future actors in the coming days. My opinion too. Because, I mean, he was done. When when Logan was done, he was done. And I I don't think he's a liar. You know? I I think he was legitimately done, but the money probably talked, but also having a really good script that made sense to bring him back, that had to happen. But when we when July gets here, we'll definitely be covering that movie. Real quick, we do have some other I just some things I wanted to mention. Like, we are getting a Spider Man Noir live action something. I think it's a movie over on Amazon Prime next year or the year after. It is weird because the page is gonna be in. It was it was such a random Yeah. Drop. Like, when I when I heard that announcement, it just kinda took me by surprise. Like, I'm I'll watch it. Sure. It sounds neat because I liked that character in Yeah. In the Spider Verse movies, but a a live action one? Like, that that's the part that really Yeah. That's what I thought too. It's like that it that is really weird. We also got, we got to see our our first look at, what's his name? David Koren Sweat? Is that is that how you pronounce his name? Superman. Yeah. Oh, in the the poster with him Yeah. Putting in boots on? Yeah. I that that poster says a lot where it's like, I'll be back, Lois. Don't you worry. I don't know. There's a lot to read into that poster. Right. But I'm excited. Like, I don't know. I'm looking forward to James Gunn and what he has going on for, the new DCEU. I know some people are a little nervous about it. I don't know. I'm I'm I'm looking forward to it. We don't know a lot, but, I might actually be excited for a spider or a Superman movie for once. Yeah. We'll see. I'll wait until we Get a trailer. Know more about it. I don't wanna get excited about a Superman movie just for it to let me down. Hey. The way I look at it is I already have really low expectations for Superman movies. So Yeah. I mean, I I was one of the people who, like, I liked Man of Steel quite a bit, and then the DCEU. Yeah. It really overall just, like, the their, like, their phase one wasn't bad, you know, with, like, Man of Steel and Aquaman and Wonder Woman. Their first films Mhmm. Were all pretty good. And then after that, it was No bueno. Not great. Yeah. I just kinda wanted to to bring those things up because, we'd we've been talking a lot about Marvel since we brought the show back, but we are equal opportunity, haters and lovers around here. So, it's just something good has to come out from DC, that's worth talking about, or something terrible has to come out that's worth talking about. I am not talking about, Black Adam, though. I that movie was horrendous. And there's always worse. Yeah. You know? So I mean, Marvel has its has its fair share of It's true. I think I'm bad films. I mean, just look at the the look at the Spider Verse. Yeah. The the Sony, Venom, not not into the The Venom versus more more accurate. Sony. Yeah. Venom I still have not watched Madame Web because we have, like, the lowest tier of Netflix. And it's on Netflix, but it's locked. And I'm like, it's not worth upgrading to watch that movie for me. Wait. Yes. So, for those of you who don't know this, if you are on the lowest tiered plan for, Netflix. I think it's, like, seven dollars a month, I think. You get ads. But then the, when content drops, depending on what it is, they will lock it because due to, like, streaming rights and things like that, you have to upgrade. And yeah. So it's locked. I can't watch it because, apparently, it's such a good movie that I have to pay more for it. And I said, no. I would not pay a nickel more per month just to watch that movie. Yeah. Wow. The how long has it been like that? It's been like that since I got Netflix a couple months ago, because I'm gonna say we've had it two two months now. Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah. I have I was like, I can deal with ads. Like, I knew that there was, like, right. I knew there was an ad version, but I had no idea that they locked certain content. It's weird. I so Madame Web came out, and I saw it was locked because I was like, oh, we can finally talk about it on the show because I didn't go see it, but that is not the case. And there are a couple other movies that came out that I was like, oh, I can't wait to watch this. And they were locked too. So now you know. Well, maybe with Madame Web, we wait until the end of the year after the last Venom movie and Kraven come out. And then I have a feeling it it kinda feels like that might be the end of the the Sony Spider Man Maybe. I've I've heard rumors of a Spider Man four happening. I don't know. I don't know. That's what I've heard. But but but Spider Man four would would be MCU. May would it? So, like, those are those are its own thing? I don't know. I don't know. We're just guessing at this point. I don't know. I I do know that Venom three is It is the last dance. Movie of Yeah. Tom Hardy. Yeah. Which is okay. First one is the best one out of the two so far. Third one, they are gonna have to bring out the bells and whistles and whatnot in order for me to like it because I did not care for the second one. Yeah. It it was not And if you guys ever want us to review any of these movies, leave them in the comments over at geek this podcast dot com. Jump over on social media.
