Protoclone, the human like robot with synthetic muscles. Clone robotics protoclone features synthetic muscles, a polymer skeleton, and advanced sensors moving like a human. Future uses may include household chores and a change to the protocol of the show. Protoclone, the robot, is the most whack thing I have seen in a very, very long time. You know, to be honest with you, if I'd have seen someone like this walking around, I would have thought that we're, had zombies on the loose or something. This thing looks crazy, and it looks like a human in many regards except for the head. The body looks pretty close, but this Polish company, Clone Robotics, again has unveiled Protoclone, a human like robot. It's equipped with a synthetic muscle and polymer skeleton consisting of 206 bones. The YouTube clip, which will be linked up in the show notes, is a hundred a 10% weird. So I'll have that link up in the show notes for you to know to check out. But the protoclonal has a 500 watt electric pump as its heart, four cameras for eyes. In addition, the robot has 320 pressure sensitive sensors and 70 inertial sensors. In the future, this kind of robot could eventually help around the household by cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry, murdering you. You never know. This saying, you know, when these companies reveal these prototypes, there's one thing they could do. Put a put a set of pants on them. Put a set of pants on them. Come on. Don't make them look so weird. They just look really, really weird. That's my lead story for tonight. And, of course, we got a lot more coming for you. Welcome to episode 1,802. Hope everyone's doing well and, playing around with a little bit of a new format tonight. Gonna kick off shows going forward with the first the first hot and heavy article, before we get into, the rest of the tech stack. So I hope that, you're good with that. We've got some emails that have come in from the show. We'll cover that at the end. And I do have I do wanna thank the, the submission of the long audio file. And Andrew, yeah, just a little too political. I'll I'll I'll talk about Elon, near the end of the show. But, definitely thank you everyone for their support. Leading off here, Gmail is killing SMS based two FA login codes in favor of a new authentication system using a QR code. So apparently, instead of them sending you a text with a code, they're gonna have you snap a QR code with your phone, which is okay for people that have a working camera. But what happens if you don't have a working camera on your phone? I'm sure there's gonna be other authentication methods, but it just seems to me that this is, this is overkill. They say it's too easy to hack, which I find quite surprising. But, anyway, that is forthcoming. We will see where that leads, given time. Chegg is suing Google. Now, this is a very interesting a very interesting development. And I'm not familiar with Chegg. I did read a little bit up about them. But Chegg is suing Google for hurting traffic with AI as it considers a strategic alternative. They filed suit in a district court against Google claiming that AI summaries of search results have hurt the online education company's traffic. They've engaged Goldman Sachs to consider strategic options including acquisition and going private. Chegg depends on referrals from Google's monopoly search engine for a large portion of the revenue that devotes to producing original online content, the company said in the filing. Now here's the deal. I've been saying for a while that the summaries are going to make or break tens of thousands of companies. It's gonna be worse than dropping in the search results because at least you're in the search results. The summaries are gonna get to a point where people aren't gonna go any further, and they're not gonna click off. They're not gonna come to Geek News Central. They're not gonna come to Blueberry Podcasting. They're not gonna come to your local business. If you are a national company, global company, this is, this is very, very scary in what's forthcoming. Apparently, Chegg is worse is worth less than 200,000,000. And in after hours trading, their stock was just above a dollar per share. Chegg reported a 6,100,000.0 net loss on a hundred and 43,500,000.0 in the fourth quarter of revenue, a 24% decline year over year. Allison expected a hundred and 42,100,000.0, but management called the first quarter revenue between $1.14 and $1.16. The stock was down 18% in extended training. Google forces companies like Chegg to supply our proprietary content in order to be included in Google search function, and the search company uses its monopoly power reaping the financial benefits of Chegg's content without having to spend a dime. Despite the suit, Chegg's has its own AI strategy. It's drawn on Meta's open source llamas while other models from privately held Entropic and Mistral. Chegg is also a partner with OpenAI. So what it really is, and here's the deal, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't, but the traffic to your website is gonna drop. We're already tracking it. We're already seeing a drop in traffic. I've gotten a couple of private notes about the content I put at the end of the show. And just a tip. I I feel that it's important for this show's survival to do that. You know, this show, Geekness Central, is a small fish, a very, very, very, very big ocean. And, I have to fight for every little bit of traffic I get no matter how it gets to me. And, hopefully, with the content that we've put out for so many years and continuing to write original content, not written by AI, that we will end up being sourced a little bit so that we get some of that traffic to us. Time will tell. But I understand why they're suing. We'll see where this leads, if it leads to anything. There's a new PayPal scam out there and, you know, they come in all the time. So what they're doing now, this new phishing technique, the tech uses a feature recently added to the payments platform. The goal is to get victims to install remote desktop access software. Don't ever do that. Don't ever get phished to install some sort of software on your device. The victims get an email from service@paypal.com claiming a new address has been added to their account, and the purchase of a new MacBook was completed. Vixens then were invited to call a phone number and close with the email if they wish to cancel the order. Of course, it's a fake, but people call in. So there's no new address. There's no MacBook, And the phone number, while active, does not belong to PayPal. Rather, it belongs to someone in probably in Pakistan or India, more than likely Pakistan. Then they want to install an antivirus to clean things up, but the antivirus is actually connect wise, green connect client, which it grants the attackers total control over the computer. And that's how they steal your money, steal your account money without you doing anything because they just get your password and they go in and use your computer when you're not there or talk you into going and getting cash. Again, again, this is some of these scams are pretty well known. They're just variations of different scams are out there. This is a variation of a well known scam. So just be careful. Watch out for the elderly. These are the people that are mostly falling for this. The IRS will never call you. If you ever worked with the IRS, you get a letter in the mail. It's the most dreaded thing you can find in your mailbox because you're like, what do they want? That's how they communicate by letter. Be careful. Their hidden cost yes. Their hidden cost of buying cheap headphones is pretty simple. They don't last very long, and they suck. But anyway, makeuse make use of Com has a list of things that happens when you buy a cheap set of earbuds. We've all done it once in a while. You left your earbuds at home and you bought the cheapest thing you could find in a seven eleven or in a, you know, in a vending machine, $10. Right? You buy a cheap one to get you by. The driver's flat. It doesn't have it doesn't hardly hear anything. It's made of cheap plastic. It's gonna break. We all know that. They're so cheap. They're destined to be go in the trash can within a week. But just be aware of that. Now here's the thing. I have worn the same set of earbuds in my ears for as long as I can really remember. The only thing I've changed is the cord. These are Shure Shure earbuds. Of course, I have to remember to take them with me. I don't take them with me. I gotta buy a $10 cheap pair. But again, I've had these for years and I can change. It basically connects back there. It's got a little snap in segment. I can change the the cable, but the earbuds were relatively expensive. Well, you know, probably a hundred and $80 is what these cost, but I've been wearing them for years. And many of you buy earbuds. The earbuds for me are always I I have to have a very controlled environment to wear earbuds from Apple. And the reason for that is I just you know, if I'm they're not wired, they fall out of my ear and I have to go searching for them. And it's not something I'm gonna be doing in, you know, sports or some sort of activity wearing earbuds. I'm gonna use something wired. So, again, we all know the value of buying a good set of headphones. We really, really do. Asus has a new mouse, and it smells weird. And this one makes me go, really? You can fill it with a scented oil. You can fill the fragrance mouth with a fragrance. Okay. I don't want my hand to smell like a fragrance. Mouses are nasty enough as it is. And with trackballs, I gotta clean these bad boys about every week because they're picking up, well, I think dead skin, whatever. You know? And inside, they get a little grimy. You know? This is why that's why mouses don't last forever. They just they take a lot of abuse and, you know, we're using our we're using them with our hands whether they're clean or not. You know? No one wipes their mouses down with alcohol, at least I don't. Because, you know, it's like it's mine. It's my no one else is touching my mouse. If someone else was, I'd probably be wiping it down. And I know where my hands have been. So I don't want a mouse that smells weird. It's just a gimmick. You know, what is the what is the situation with, personal responsibility? I I I don't know anymore. And I don't know if people have personal responsibility. But one woman reaped a hundred and £70,000 after becoming addicted to candy crush. That must have been one heck of an addiction. Now, can guys get money for being addicted to other things? But anyway, this this candy crush addiction, the National Health Service paid a 6 figure compensation to an unnamed woman after she developed the crippling candy crush addiction after the side effects of a prescription drug impaired impaired her impulse control. The medicine intended to treat rest restless leg syndrome and Parkinson's is a class of drugs known as dopamine agonist. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of reward, and artificial increase caused by these drugs can make someone seek out more of it. And that's something mobile games excel at providing. Yes. Dopamine hits. Small rewards like opening a loot box, receiving a new item, or just finishing a level all generate boost of dopamine in the brain just like flipping on a TikTok. Within weeks or prescription, the woman began to obsessively play Candy Crush before progressing to virtual slot machines. The NHS has admitted that the general practitioner failed to warn her of the side effects and prescribed her a double dose her a dose double the recommended amount. Oh, that's a little bit different. She's been since granted approximately $215,000 in compensation. What about the doctor? Did he get a fine? This is the first time in a situation like this. There is another man who was prescribed the same medication, went on the loose to more than a hundred thousand in online gambling. Ladies and gentlemen, are you looking for an exit? Are you looking for a little cash reward? Sounds to me like this is a great way to get free money from the from The UK. Wow. The question is, did the doctor get punished? Nothing said about that, did it? The iPhone 17 might miss out on Apple's latest new feature, but it's not one you'd expect. The no c one modem on the next iPhone. We talked about the c one modem a little bit on the last show. That's for Wi Fi. With each new generation phone, we expect to see Apple fit its high end flagship phones with its latest and greatest. For example, we're expecting the iPhone 17 Pro and I 17 Pro Max to come equipped with updated video capability, refreshed design, and a faster processor. However, the new rumor says Apple will be skipping its latest self designed internal component when it comes to iPhone 17. It's home if this rumor holds true, Apple's next handset will not be getting its new c one cellular modem. I guess it's more than the the Wi Fi. You know, I I've got ladybugs. I don't know what it is right now. Why do I have ladybugs? It's very weird. I got one crawling up the screen up here. It's something about this, where I live. I've only ever seen ladybugs in this loft in the winter. I don't know where they're coming from. You know? They're just and they're not harmful. They're just annoying. It's dead winter outside, cold. And I got lady I got no food out, no rotten food out, no fruit out, Nothing to munch on. Counters are clean. What are they eating? I don't get it. I got two of them. One of them flying up in the lights like a fly does. It's really strange. You know, the best way to take care of them? Vacuum cleaner. Suck them right up. The company is returning to the moon. Here's how it will avoid tipping over again. Should we say break a leg? Intuitive Machine became the first private space company to land on the moon even though they flipped over. Now the Houston based company seeks to repeat the journey. The executive said they've made improvements to their new spacecraft, Athena. This should help it avoid the problem they had in 2024. The mission is referred to as I m two prime one. It's set to launch on SpaceX Falcon nine this coming Wednesday. So, we got another thing happened this week. We may have another SpaceX Starship launch on Friday. Right. Right. Right. There you go. Bye bye. Now he flew over here and got my other screen. So, anyway, we'll see how this goes. They're they've got a direct shot to the moon. They'll they'll be orbit burn. Don't know exactly which day they're going to land, but they're carrying, in the in this launch, they're carrying, carrying some microsats too. So, a multiple load here for, for the SpaceX team on this one. So, Wednesday. NASA has a new telescope. And, you know, I'm I'm very curious sometimes about some of these projects. And tell me what triggers me here, and and and and I'll share it with you. And I'll I'll give you my my trigger. NASA will soon launch a new telescope, which says it will create the most colorful map of the cosmos. The SPEAR x telescope is relatively small but will provide a humongous amount of knowledge in its short two year mission. Two year. It's an infrared telescope designed to take spectroscopic images, one that measures individual wavelength light from a source. In this short, the mission, which is scheduled to launch on the twenty seventh, with all things going well, will help us understand the universe, how it came to be, and why life exists inside it. Two years. How much money do we spend on this for a two year mission? Does it say? You're gonna put something in space. Better have a longer life than two years. Now we know sometimes they extend these missions. But at the same time, once they get up there, they gotta go through testing and a whole bunch of other stuff. So, hopefully, this thing wasn't too expensive. Two years. What say you? We're gonna do stuff in space. We're gonna spend all kinds of money. Shouldn't this thing last a little longer than two years? Would they take ten years to build it? Curious. Again, SpaceX will launch a Starship mega rocket this week. They're shooting on Friday, February 28. So we'll keep we'll keep I heard it late in the afternoon, like, almost dark in Texas. Five thirty six. So, they're shooting for the twenty eighth. We will we will see what happens. Should be exciting to report on that launch. Nvidia is gonna report in their quarter four earnings Wednesday as a tariff export control threatens Loom. So we'll see yeah, if, they took a whack here because of, DeepSeek. See how much, how much they were impacted. Wall Street is anticipating EPS of point 84 on revenue of 38,200,000,000.0. So, we'll see what that report is. We'll talk about it on on Thursday. Also, if you're in the in the market for a MacBook Air, don't buy one. A new m four version is tipped to land within weeks. You know, these, these computers are coming out on a regular basis. So, again, if you're waiting on something, don't make the jump. You know, the Mac minis are m four. The MacBook Air's m four. The MacBook Pros, I believe, is a m four. So, you know, double check. If it's an m three processor and you're buying something Apple, it may be a good time to just wait. I don't know if this is the last one that's going to m four or not, but just do your research. Norton, Norton Boost AI scan protection tools for all users. This AI powered scan protection is built directly into the current Norton plans, and I do use Norton. You use Norton Antivirus, and it's called GenieScan Protection and GenieScan Protection Pro, which it says provide a advanced AI protection in all the usual hotbeds of scams, text, phone calls, emails, and web. Norton says that Genie analyzes the meaning words, not just links to spot hidden scam patterns that even the most trained eye can miss. Norton's most comprehensive plan, Norton three sixty with LifeLock Ultimate Plus also offers scam support and reimbursement charges. Now I've had a LifeLock membership for many, many years, because of the public nature of what I do and a few other protection services not endorsing. There there's another one. There's number two. I I think I just did the for those of you watching, I just did the the flick. So I think I took care of two of them here, but that means I got two dead ladybugs around. But, anyway, I use Malwarebytes and Norton three sixty. I use that on all my computers, even my MacBooks. Virgin Media Internet's been restored after an earlier outage, so an issue which left thousands of Virgin Media o two customers unable. Access Internet been resolved. Down detectors, with Trex website showed more than 10,000 people reported their broadband not working on Monday. So, that has been restored. ISPs now fear a wave of state laws after New York's fifteen fifteen dollar broadband mandate has been put forth. New York's law requiring Internet service providers offer broadband for fifteen to twenty dollars a month to spur legislative efforts in other states to guarantee affordable service with people with low incomes. So far, legislatures in Vermont, Massachusetts, and California have proposed laws inspired by the New York requirement. Christopher Morrow, newly elected Democrat state legislator in Vermont, introduced a bill on January 29 as modeled on New York's law. So here's what's gonna happen. I'm gonna tell you what's gonna happen. They're gonna force these 15 to $20 plans, but the rest of us are gonna pay more. There's not there's no way the ISPs are gonna lose money. They're not. They're gonna pass the cost on to us. That's gonna happen. Each state is free to do what they do, but I guarantee you, if you're paying full price, you're gonna pay more. You probably will. President Trump has threatened tariffs against any foreign nation taxing US tax giants, so this is interesting. So in a recent memorandum, the president said my administration will not allow American companies and workers, the American economic and national security interests to be compromised by one-sided anti competitive policies and practices of the of the foreign governments. Digital service taxes are one of the targets of the memorandum, which the president has long been critical. Digital service taxes were introduced to prevent tech companies from making profits in one country and collecting said profits in another country with more lenient taxation. As the register states, Netflix subscriptions were paid to a Netflix entity registered in The Netherlands despite the users paying for their subscription from all over the world, thus dodging the taxation that would usually be paid for the economic activity generated in the user company. American businesses will no longer prop up failed foreign economies through extraordinary fines and taxes. All these measures violate American sovereignty and offshore American jobs. So it does go to add that the Biden administration was also not a fan of a DST with The UK, Europe, and India dropping some of the DST regulations rather than face a 25% tariff. So this is just not a Republican initiative. The Biden administration also supported it. However, as many top US tech companies continue to avoid paying any taxes at all, which is true, Despite generating record pop ups, OECD has been largely ineffective in its purpose in any country attempting to levy taxis against taxes against US tech companies will face Trump's wrath. So we will see if this all works out. Apple, though, is pledging to spend 500,000,000,000 in The United States over the next few years. Apple wants to invest r and d, silicon, and AI. Now Apple, five hundred billion is just kind of a, yeah, surrounding error considering how much they make. But, again, they committed to spending 500,000,000,000 over the next four years. Central to the announcement is Apple's attention to support US manufacturing, something that the president is keen to do as he looks to reduce the country's reliance on China. Michigan, Texas, California, Arizona, Nevada, Iowa, Oregon, North Carolina, and Washington will all benefit Cupertino's giant's cash influx. So, let's make it come on. Let's give me a real number, Apple. You guys you guys got the money. Come on. Let's let's, let's hit it out of the ballpark. Robinhood says the SEC has dismissed crypto unit investigation, the latest sign of easier regulation for the industry. The SEC is dropping its investigation into Robinhood. So, change of a change of administration, change in priorities. Anthropics has launched its new AI model that thinks as long as you want. This is called Claude three point seven SONNET, which the company designed to think about questions for as long as users wants it to. That's curious. Now here's something that that I did. I have opted in for at least one month using the pro version of ChatGPT. Today was my first day. And specifically, I'm working on some things and some planning and some projects that I thought maybe I can use a little extra oomph, and I did a couple of tests. I used the same exact prompt on the o three reasoning model, and I used the o o one and o one pro. And the deltas, I would say, were 10% better, maybe 15. And it it was you know, in that regard, I still had to go in and do some editing, but my editing was less. And, I've learned quite a bit on how to prompt these, these reasoning models. It's a series of questions. You say, I am going to do this, and here is this site and this site and this site and here is this link and this link and this link. I want you to collect all the information you can about those links. And then after you've done that, come back, and I ask it another question, and and I walk it through. And three, four steps later, I'm getting a product out that is pretty impressive. And, it's really expensive, you know, $200 for a month. But, again, I will run it for a month and see if I can get enough value out of it between the $20 and 200 plan. I don't know at this point, to be honest with you. Plus, we're expecting 4.5 here shortly from, OpenAI. So, you know, things are moving very, very quickly. And we look at this announcement today with Anthropic three point seven. And but three Claude three point seven sunk cost $3 per million input tokens, meaning you could enter roughly 750,000 more words than the entire Lord of Ring series into Claude for $3 and $15 per million output token. That makes it more expensive than OpenAI's o three Mini, which is a dollar 10. There is a bunch of it's they're attracted to the light. That's what's going on. That makes it, that makes it more expensive than so, anyway, it's it's very expensive for the AI portion of this. So, and, again, this is Anthropic's first model that can reason, so time will tell. Trump two point o brings cuts to cyber consumer protections one month in his term. President took action to shrink the government through mass layoff, firing some withholding funds allocated by Congress, have turned five federal cybersecurity and consumer protection programs in disarray. At the same time, agencies are battling an ongoing effort to wrest control over their network and data. So talk here a little bit about Musk. And some of the and, again, the comment came out of the The UK, One of, one of our longtime listeners. Some also, he works on the website from time to time writing articles. You know, in The United States, the executive branch, yes, congress will go out and make laws to spend money, but there's a whole bunch of arbitrary stuff that doesn't have specific line items. And this is where a lot of these these cuts are happening. And the executive branch can control how much is being spent. There's obviously a big fight going on, but everyone thinks Elon is doing all of this. It's he's not. He has read access only. He cannot authorize something to be cut. That either has to be done by a director, by a cabinet member, the president. There's certain things. He just doesn't can't say kill this. In The United States right now, we are $37,000,000,000,000 in debt. We are adding we're spending 8 We're spending almost a trillion dollars every ten months just to pay the interest on the debt. And I think most Americans say some things need to go. Some things need to be cut. And there has to be a lot of cuts, about $2,000,000,000,000 worth of cuts. They haven't even scratched the surface. And a lot of this stuff, they're gonna have to go back to congress and say, hey. You need to adjust the budget. And it's gonna be up to the will of congress to change stuff in the budget. People do not like to cut anything in government. I I know. They do not like to cut nothing in government, but something has to give. We're spending too much money. And I already pay my taxes, good lord, between state and here's another thing too. I don't know how it is where you live. Some place has municipal taxes. Some places have city taxes. Some places have, well, municipal, city, county, state, federal, four, five taxes some people are playing. I'm lucky. I pay two taxes, state tax and federal tax. Those are two taxes I pay. But it's about 40 if you look at the tax brackets and everything, it could be upwards of 40%. Thirty, thirty five %. Taxes. Depends on your tax bracket on what you're paying. 22, 20 three percent, maybe 3% the state, 24, 20 five percent taxes. That's enough. And I place state income tax on everything I buy. So if we really look at how much money we give the government, if we really look at that number every month, it's insane. So I'm personally cut away. You know, get rid of the fat. My company, every morning when my team meets, we do a what I did yesterday, what I'm doing tomorrow. What I did yesterday, what I'm doing tomorrow. Every single day, five days a week, we do that. Every team member, fifteen minutes is what it takes to get through that call five days a week. And I'm keeping track what everyone's doing. When I was doing federal work, I had to put in my time sheet everything I did down to a line item, and that was verified by my supervisor. So some government agencies have detailed tracking of time and task. In fact, because I was working tech support as part of my job with with the with the navy, the customer would submit a ticket. I'd get assigned the ticket. I have to put the ticket in work. I'd do the job three, four hours, whatever it took, working with the customer. I'd sign off the ticket and the customer would validate it. Some stuff, I initiated my own ticket and I would say what I was doing, doing AutoCAD drawing, whatever it may be. And that whatever time I counted for, my supervisor, my government military supervisor would approve it while my my, federal supervisor would say, okay. Got the review. I reviewed it. So at least where I was at, every minute was accounted for. Every minute. I don't know about other federal agencies, but I know that but, again, you you can fudge, but but you better not fudge because if you have a a an actual supervisor that cares, they'll make sure you're not fudging. But who knows? Who knows what's going on in each agency? I track all my time, even though I'm the owner of Blueberry Podcasting, In thirty minute increments, I track what I do every single day and putting in a task that I do. And you exactly that following morning, I read through all the things that I did, and I have Jira tasks that have accompanying action, cause and effect. If people are working forty hours a week, great. If they're not, go. Fire them. Microsoft has dropped some AI data center leases. The company has pledged 80,000,000,000 towards computing capacity, but Wall Street is questioning AI demand over the long term. But they've dropped some AIs. Maybe they they're not needing so much compute. Microsoft has quite launched a free ad supported Office app and no one noticed. Did you know that Microsoft Office officially offers a free version of Microsoft Office? Wow. And it's not an ad supported version. Previously, you could only view documents once your Office license expired, but now you can edit and create Office documents as well. Having said that, there are some caveats to the free desktop version. So this article talks about it. You can't save documents locally. You have to use OneDrive. So you have to have a OneDrive subscription. That makes a difference. But you get free free up to five gigs of storage as well. So link will be in the show notes. There's a win win for you if you still need Microsoft once in a while. And, again, the courts are gonna serve some of this other stuff out with the government, but I hope they cut the living hell out of everything. Some of it we'll regret. Some of it will have to be adjusted. But, you know, it'd be nice. It'd be nice. You know, I'm gonna be dead before, you know, this thing collapses, I would hope. But who knows? I if I live another thirty years, we could all end up in the poor house. You know, when Vietnam's economy went to crap, they went to the dollar. And the reason was is their their their, local money wasn't worth it was it was actually, worse less than toilet paper. So I don't think we want the dollar to be worth less than toilet paper. So, we gotta get the debt under control. Don't care who's in office. Time to slash. Slash and burn. Okay. And I I do I do appreciate, Andrew, your email and with the and the and the time you took in, but it was I just don't wanna go that deep. We're already deep enough as it is. And, but but thanks, Andrew, for that. I appreciate it. Bob, sent an email. He said, hey. I meant to tell you in the last email, congratulations on hitting 1,800. Thank you so much. And, Bob was the one that talked to me about the neighbor was in her eighties that got scammed. So it just goes keeps going on and on and on. And these savages, these scammers, we we have to protect. We have to protect our elderly and having their bank accounts emptied. It's hard enough in the economy as it is. Okay. Geeknews@gmail.com, geek news at g mail dot com, at geek news on x.
